Born and raised in Livingston, Texas, Veatrice A. Cook's passion for physical therapy ignited during her junior year at Livingston High School. However, her path was not without its challenges, especially as an African American student in a field where diversity was lacking. In 1968, less than 2% of physical therapists were African American, highlighting the stark reality Ms. Cook faced. Despite this, she pursued her dream and earned a BS degree in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in 1976, followed by a MA degree in Special Education from the University of Texas in 1981.

Ms. Cook's commitment to her craft goes beyond just academic achievements. She delved into the John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach, refining her skills as a clinician. Today, with over 47 years of experience, she serves as the Director of Rehabilitation for TeamCareRehab, Inc in San Antonio, Texas. When asked about retirement, her response echoes her passion, "I love the work that I do, and it’s really not work when it’s something that you enjoy."

The scarcity of African American representation in physical therapy spurred Ms. Cook to take action. In 1987, she co-founded the Texas Network of Minority Physical Therapists (TNMPT) and in 1989, she furthered her impact by organizing The American Academy of Physical Therapy, Inc (AAPT) alongside Dr. Lynda Woodruff. The formation of AAPT brought together 82 African American physical therapists and physical therapist assistants to advocate for greater diversity in the profession. Ms. Cook's pivotal role as the Charter Treasurer and her dedication as the Annual Conference Chair for a decade solidified her status as a trailblazer and mentor.

The tale of Veatrice A. Cook is not just one of personal triumph but of a steadfast commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse future for the physical therapy profession. Her journey serves as an inspiration to all, emphasizing the transformative power of unwavering passion and perseverance.

Veatrice A. Cook's narrative encapsulates the essence of resilience and determination, urging future generations to strive for excellence in the face of adversities. Her legacy as a leader in the physical therapy realm endures, fueling the aspirations of countless individuals seeking to make a difference.

It serves as a guiding light, illuminating a path of inclusivity and empowerment in a profession that thrives on diversity.
